Irish Links Description

Following the conclusion of the Ryder Cup,
Irish Links By Sea takes you to the Jack Nicklaus designed Mount Juliet, set in magnificent rolling countryside, the spectacular Old Head Golf Links, the remote and distinguished Waterville Links, and the renowned Ballybunion.

  • Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links
PLEASE NOTE - passengers not participating in the Ryder Cup program, but participating only in the Irish Links by Sea program, join the Clipper Adventurer this afternoon.

This challenging traditional links course provides outstanding views overlinks%20at%20portmarnock.jpg Howth and the Irish Sea. The first five holes away from the sea provide a gentle start, but then the course comes alive as the holes make their way through the dunes back towards the sea. The back nine provides a series of stunning links holes with deep bunkers with steep faces giving the course a traditional look while incorporating modern architectural techniques.
    www.portmarnock.com
  • Mount JulietImg306.jpg

A marvelous parkland layout designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened for play in 1991. The course played host to the Irish Open in the 90's, when Nick Faldo collected his third Irish Open title and most recently the American Express Championships in 2002, which was won by Tiger Woods.

The layout winds through the estate amongst, lime trees, beeches and oaks in the grounds of an 18th century Manor House.
Feature holes abound on the course, but the 3rd hole, a stunning par 3 from an elevated tee to a green, guarded by a natural stream and lake, is one that golfers always remember.
The par 5 10th hole with its copse of trees, which tests the golfers strategy, is also a favourite.
    Par 72; Length 7,200 yards

  • Old Head Golf LinksImg192.jpg

Opened in 1997, this classic seaside championship links course has already received much acclaim. It is now one of the most talked-about courses in the world.
The Old Head is a remarkably dramatic piece of Ireland, protruding over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. As well as bringing the sea & cliffs into play, you have to contend with the prevailing winds.

Nine holes play along the cliff tops, and all eighteen holes provide stunning ocean views. Golfer's paradise and it's scenic beauty has been compared to Cypress Point and Pebble Beach.
The course comprises five par 5's, five par 3's and eight par 4's, the links stretches to over 7,200 yards from the tips and with a minimum of six tees on every hole, provides a stern test for all abilities.
    www.oldheadgolflinks.com

    • Waterville

Located in the southwest corner of Ireland , on the famous scenic route, the "Ring of Kerry". A spectaculwaterville1.jpgar location and an outstanding test of golf, Waterville has developed into one of the most admired and respected courses in Ireland.

The course lies in the dunes overlooking the beautiful Ballinskelligs Bay in the wonderfully isolated town of Waterville. The links as we know today opened in 1973, and was the vision of Irish born American, John A. Mulcahy,  who wanted to build the most testing golf links in the world.  He combined with Irish Architect, Eddie Hackett, to produce one of Ireland's finest links.
The orignal nine  holes were reconfigured and expanded to create today's front nine. It's layout was designed as a contrast to the more rugged and exposed back nine, which is one of the most demanding test in golf. Most recently Tom Faxio was commissioned to update the memorable Eddie Hackett masterpiece resulting in serveral new holes and improvements.
      Par 72; Length 7,225 yards
      www.watervillegolf.com
  • Ballybunion
    Img299.jpg
This wonderful links course has a wild look with long grass, covering the immense sand dunes that hug the Atlantic Ocean.

Ballybunion is probably the most famous of the Irish links courses largely due to the plaudits received from Tom Watson who is a regular visitor. The land surrounding the small seaside town has provided what many feel is the most natural setting in the world for golf.

The Old Course is a tough challenge with towering sandhills, tight fairways and well guarded greens.  Feature holes are the 11th which runs along the cliff top and the par 3 15th a shot of 216 yards all carry and often into the sea breeze.

Sightseeing Itinerary for NON-Golfers

For those, who choose not to play golf, an extensive sightseeing itinerary is offered including Waterford, Cork & the Blarney Stone, Killarney and Limerick

  • Monday - September 25
    Powerscourt House & Gardens

    Img322.png

PLEASE NOTE - passengers not participating in the Ryder Cup program, but participating only in the Irish Links by Sea program, join the Clipper Adventurer this afternoon.

Non-Golfers will have the opportunity to visit Powerscourt House & Gardens in Co Wicklow. Powerscourt House today reflects centuries of history as the site dates back to the castle of c. 1300.
The house stands in a strategic location, controlling access to the region of the rivers Dargle, Glencree and Glencullen. The house contains some of the finest 18th century interiors in Ireland.
The gardens were begun by Richard Wingfield in the 1740's. The word garden belies the magnitude of this creation, which stretches out over 45 acres. It is a sublime blend of formal gardens, sweeping terraces, statuary and ornamental lakes together with secret hollows, rambling walks, walled gardens and over 200 variations of trees and shrubs.

This evening the Clipper Adventurer will depart Dublin and sail down the eastern coast of Ireland towards the next berth in Wateford.

  • Tuesday - September 26
Waterford Crystal Factory & Curraghmore House and Gardens

wineglasses.jpgThis morning the Clipper Adventurer will berth in the town of Wateford, the oldest city in Ireland. A walled city of Viking origins, it retains much of it's medieval character together ith the graceful buildings from its 18th century expansion.

Non-Golfers will enjoy a visit to the world famous Wateford Crystal Factory. The Visitors Centre Tour gives you an opportunity to witness how the crystal is produced, from molten crystal through to finished masterpieces. Production started in 1783 and the factory is the largest glassworks in the world.

    After lunch
visit Img323.pngCurraghmore House and Gardens, tha magnificent home of the Marquis of Waterford and his ancestors since 1170. The interior of the house contains exceptionally fine plasterwork. Grounds include outstanding Arboretum, shell grootto, built and personally decorated by Catherine Poer, Countess of Tyrone in 1754 and a bridge built in 1205 for King John to cross the River Clodagh.

This evening the Clipper Adventurer will sail along the South Coast of Ireland to her anchorage at Kinsale.

  • Wednesday - September 27
    Kinsale and Blarney Castle, Cork

Img324.pngThe Clipper Adventurer will be at anchor in Summer cove. A short zodiac ride will brig passengers ashore in Kinsale.

Non-Golfers will have the opportunity to spend time in Kinsale, one of Ireland's most attractive villages with narrow lanes and slate hung houses overlooking the broad estuary of the River Bandon.
Visits are recommended to the Norman built, 12th century church of St. Multose, the 15th century Desmond Castle housing the International Museum of Wine and the many interesting speciality shops.
    Following time in Kinsale,
visits are planned to Blarney Castle, where the gift of eloquent speech is said to  be bestowed on all those, who kiss the Blarney Stone, and to Blarney Woollen Mills, where visitors can watch the weaving process.

This evening the Clipper Adventurer will continue its journey around the Southwestern coastline to her anchorage at Valentia Island on the Iveragh Peninsula.

  • Thursday - September 28
    Ring of Kerry

Img328.pngThe Clipper Adventurer will be anchored off Valentia Island, on the southwest coast of Ireland. The island is best known for it's slate quarry that provided slate for the roof of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster and the site from where the first transatlantic cable was laid. A short zodiac ride will bring passengers ashore at Renard Point on the mainland.

Non-Golfers will be able to tour around the Iveragh peninsula, a dramatically scenic and historic route, commonly known as the Ring of Kerry. The complete route is 100 miles long, but your journey will be broken by many stops, to admire the scenic beauty of the area, that changes dramatically around every corner. Watch how the landscape changes from the "Peat Bogs" to dramatic cliff tops view over the Altantic Ocean.

This evening the Clipper Adventurer will set sail for Foynes on the River Shannon.
  • Friday - September 29
Adare and Bunratty Castle & Folk Park

The Clipper Adventurer will be berthed at Foynes on the River Shannon.

Img325.png Non-Golfers will depart the ship for a visit to Adare, which is generally regarded as Ireland's prettiest village. It snuggles in a wooded setting among rich, quiet farmlands by the River Maigue. Img326.pngOrange thatched cottages line its broad street, punctuated with beautiful old stone buildings and picturesque ruins.
The tour continues through Limerick, the fourth largest city in Ireland.
Set astride the River Shannon, and most recently the setting for Pulitzer Prize winning "Angela's Ashes" and its screen adaptation.
Then onto Bunratty Castle & Folk Park.
Illustrating country life in Ireland at the turn of the century, when the old agricultural practices were giving way to the modern era.
Your tour will include a visit to the famous "Durty Nellies" reputed to be the oldest pub in Ireland.

Clipper Adventurer

perry golf - clipper adventurer11.png

Length: 330 feet      Gross Tonnage 4,364 tons
Crew: American and European

Img171.jpgThe Clipper Adventurer is a handsome expedition vessel reminiscent of the days of the great ocean liners, with lots of varnished wood and brass.  She sails on a wide variety of voyages — in Europe, the Canadian Arctic, the U.S., South America, and Antarctica.

Built in 1975 as the Alla Tarasova in the former Yugoslavia, the 122-passenger M/S Clipper Adventurer underwent a $13-million conversion in 1998 in Scandinavia, and features 61 comfortable, all-outside cabins, with lower beds, private bathroom facilities, and individual temperature controls.

Img174.jpgThe window-lined dining room seats all passengers at leisurely single seating,
where superb American and Continental cuisine
is served by Clipper’s friendly staff.

There are two lounges — the Main Lounge and Bar on Promenade Deck, seating 130 passengers; and the Clipper Club, also on Promenade Deck, seating 45 passengers. There’s also a library/card room, a small workout room, a gift shop, and a hair salon.

Img177.jpgUnique to the Clipper Adventurer is a spacious, covered promenade with a beautiful wooden deck (varnished Oregon pine) where passengers can view the seascapes.
There’s also plenty of open deck space on the Boat Deck and Sun Deck, while an observation platform located forward below the Bridge is ideal for wildlife viewing.

The Clipper Adventurer is an oceangoing vessel equipped with an ice-strengthened hull (A-1 ice class) ideally suited for cruising in remote environments such as Antarctica, but supremely comfortable anywhere she sails. A fleet of Zodiac landing craft provides access to areas where no infrastructure exists. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art satellite navigation and communication equipment including telephone, fax, and e-mail.

perry golf - clipper captain.jpgThe Captain and his officers maintain an open bridge to give passengers an opportunity to observe and ask questions. An experienced cruise staff, physician, and onboard lecturers accompany all voyages to enhance the passengers’ enjoyment of the places visited.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
provided by Perry Golf

  • EMBARKATION:
Like all cruise ships, the M/S Clipper Adventurer requires time to "turn around" the ship on days when one cruise is disembarking in the morning, with a new cruise embarking in the afternoon. This is required to carry out essential maintenance, housekeeping, replenishing of supplies etc.
It is therefore not possible to board the ship on embarkation day until 4:00PM.
While an early registration and basic lounge facility at a local hotel on the day of embarkation is available, we strongly recommend that clients consider arriving at least one day early and stay overnight in a local hotel. This will ensure a more relaxing embarkation day.
  • DISEMBARKATION:
Generally passengers will be able to disembark the M/S Clipper Adventurer from approximately 6:00am and all passengers are required to vacate the vessel by 9:30am. We strongly advise you check with Jana's Dream Cruises who can advise of the appropriate details for your cruise before making any airline arrangements.
  • PASSPORTS:
A valid passport is required to enter the United Kingdom or Ireland. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the date you will be returning home. Visa requirements will be advised based on your passport' nationality
  • PHYSICAL FITNESS:
The M/S Clipper Adventurer has a limited number of decks, and there are not many stairs to climb. There is no elevator onboard. On most occasions, we will dock the ship alongside at a berth, simply requiring passengers to disembark using the gangway. On some occasions however we will anchor and use either local tenders or the ship's fleet of zodiac landing craft to reach the shore. Both of these methods are safe, and do not require particular levels of fitness.
  •  GOLF HANDICAPS:
Some of the clubs, which you will visit, can occasionally require visitors to show handicap cards. While this is very uncommon, we do recommend you travel with a handicap card. Jana's Dream Cruises or Perry golf accept no responsibility, if you do not and are subsequently denied golf. Certain clubs also place maximum handicap restrictions on visitors. If your handicap is greater than 24 (men) or 36 (ladies) please notify us in order we can discuss which clubs may have relevant restrictions.
  • CADDIES & GOLF CARTS:
The available supply of caddies varies at each club. At some, all caddie requests can be met, at others caddies may be extremely limited. We travel with our own caddiemaster to ensure continuity in the process. We do our best to allocate caddies based on need and as fairly as possible. At a few clubs there are also a small number of golf carts. All cart and caddie fees will be notified daily and are payable directly. We will provide complimentary pull carts for any clients who do not have caddies.
  • ONSHIP DINING:
An open seating policy is operated on the M/S Clipper Adventurer, and it is not possible to reserve tables in advance. Tables are generally 2,4,5,7's with the Captain's table being an 8 top. It is our experience that passengers find this an enjoyable and satisfactory arrangement, allowing passengers to move around and mix, or stay within their own company should they choose.
  • OFFSHIP DINING:
Where the ship is permitted to take foodstuffs ashore, we provide box lunches for golfers and nongolfers. In some countries regulations prohibit this, and food & beverage purchases ashore in golf clubhouses etc are at passengers own expense.
