Celtic Links Description

Prior to arriving in Dublin, Celtic Links By Sea takes you to the magnificent Ailsa Course of Turnberry, the remote and outstanding Machrihanish, the gem of the Isle of Man in the middle of the Irish Sea Castletown Links, and the outstanding Royal Liverpool, host of the 2006 British Open Championship.

  • Machrihanish Golf Club

    machrihanish.jpg

This wonderful championship links is isolated on the southwestern tip of The Mull of Kintyre between the Isle of Arran and the Hebrides. Considered one of the finest "Hidden Gems" in the British Isles. The dramatic first tee shot requires your drive to cross a corner of the Atlantic Ocean.
    www.machgolf.com

  • Westin Turnberry Resort - Ailsa Course

perry golf - turnberry.jpgLying on a spectacular curve of rockbound coast in the southern reaches of Ayrshire, the Ailsa Course has been host to the Open Championship on three previous occasions.
Long regarded as one of the finest courses in the world, the Ailsa Course first came to international prominence with the famous duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson over the four days of the 1977 Open.
MacKenzie Ross redesigned and molded the course on this exposed location ideally suited for an Open Championship.
Ailsa ranked No.3 in the UK by Golf World Magazine. Links Golf at its best.
The course winds through the dunes and out towards the craggy rocks at the famous lighthouse. There are few blind holes but a number of subtle doglegs and tough par fours make the Ailsa course a difficult one to master, especially in a wind.
The course is always in perfect condition and oversee magnificent views out to the Ailsa Craig and the Argyll peninsula and always in sight of the hotel perched on the hill top.
    Par 70, Length 6,440 yards
    www.turnberry.co.uk

  • Castletown Golf Links

With water on all sides and two magnificent bays carving great swathes along each flank, it is a dramatic and wonderfully natural site for a golf course. The course itself matches the setting, easily qualifying in the top echelons of links courses in the British Isles.
The greens are small and protected more by the traditional links humps and hollows than by excessive bunkering. Following the second World War, the course was re-designed and restored by the respected architect, Mackenzie Ross.

  • Royal Liverpool

    royall.jpg

Recently returned to the British Open rota as the venue for the 2006 Championship.
Golfers will have the opportunity to play Royal Liverpool Golf Club only 2 months after it has hosted the British Open.

A classic links course and one of the oldest in the country.
Situated in the mouth of the Dee estuary, despite its somewhat flat and benign appearance,  Royal Liverpool is among the toughest and most demanding of the great seaside championship links of Britain.
Hoylake, as it is more commonly known, lies at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Britain. Built in 1869, on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is one of the oldest English seaside courses.
It is renowned for the smoothness of the greens. From the 8th onwards there are great views over the estuary and towards the Welsh hills in the distance. Overall there is an air of tradition and past glories.

  • Island Golf Club

PLEASE NOTE:
Those passengers only participating in Celtic Links By Sea and not participating in the Ryder Cup program disembark at this stage.

islandclub1.jpg

Located to the north of Dublin City it continues a tradition of links
golf since its foundation in 1890.
A beautiful links course, in splendid isolation, is surrounded by the Irish Sea, Donabate beach and Broadmeadow estuary.
The Island presents a formidable challenge to test the capabilities of all golfers. The magnificent splendour and solitude associated with the Island is highlighted by undulating fairways rolling through majestic sand dunes.

Par 71, Length 6,685yards

Late this afternoon there will be an opportunity to attend Opening Ceremony of the Ryder Cup at the K Club when the players are introduced by their Team Captains.

Sightseeing Itinerary for NON-Golfers

For those who choose not to play golf, an extensive sightseeing itinerary is offered including the Kintyre Peninsula, Culzean Castle and Burns Country, Isle of Man, The City of Liverpool and Chester, plus of course Dublin.

  • Sunday - September 17
Kintyre Peninsula - Tarbert, Carradale, Saddell Abbey

Early this morning the Clipper Adventurer will berth in Campbeltown Harbour.

Non-Golfers will depart Campbeltown and head north traveling along the western shores of the Kintyre Peninsula. This gentle corner of the Highlands affords wonderful views over to the Atlantic Ocean and out to the Islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura.
Your first stop will be the charming fishing village of Tarbert on the shores of Loch Fyne. The tour continues around the peninsula returning down the eastern shores. The road is narrow and single lane but offers wonderful views over the Kilbrannan Sound to the Isle of Arran. We join the coast road at Claonaig, for views of Skipness Castle, stopping  at Carradale, than Saddell Abbey before returning to Campbeltown.

This evening the Clipper Adventurer will sail to the Ailsa Craig, a volcanic rock and bird sanctuary that dominates the Ayrshire coastline and remain at anchor of the Isle of Arran.

  • Monday - September 18
Ayrshire Countryside - Culzean Castle & Burns Cottage

The Clipper Adventurer will arrive this morning at its berth in Troon Harbour.

culzean.jpgNon-Golfers will tour the Ayrshire Countryside. Visits will include Culzean Castle, converted by Robert Adam, who designed much of Edinburgh's New Town. He included a "Roman" viaduct and Ruined Arch to add drama to this Italianate castle in its spectacular clifftop setting.
It contains a fine collection of paintings and furniture, and a display of weapons in the Armoury. The Circular Saloon has superb panoramic view over the Firth of Clyde and the beautiful Oval Staircase is Robert Adam's final masterpiece of interior design.
culzean1.pngIn 1945 the top floor was given to General Eisenhower as a token of Scotland's recognition of his role during World War II.
The next visit will be to Burns Cottage, where on January 25, 1759, while the cold winter winds blew in from the Atlantic, it became the scene of Scotland's most famous birthday, when the World's most loved poet Robert Burns was born. The cottage is now a musem with many interesting artefacts and manuscripts of Burns life.

This evening the M/S Clipper Adventurer will depart Troon and set sail for our next berth at Douglas, Isle of Mann.

  • Tuesday - September 19
Castletown, Castle Rushen, Snaefell Mountain Railway

Early this morning, the Clipper Adventurer will berth in Douglas on the Isle of Man, a Crown Dependency belonging to neither the United Kingdom nor the European Union. It has its own government, laws, traditions, culture and stamps. Douglas is the Isle of Man capital with by far the highest population at over 25,000.

castletown.jpgNon-Golfers will enjoy a morning tour of Castletown, one of the oldest towns in the British Isles. Its narrow streets and small fishing cottages prove this ancient past at every corner.

Visit medieval Castle Rushen & the Old House of Keys. Castle Rushen is one of Europe's most finely preserved medieval castles. The Castle was developed by successive rulers of Mann between the 13th and 16th centuries.railway.jpg

Following lunch, the afternoon excursion will involve a spectacular journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway. The track runs from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell at 2,036 ft, where, on a clear day, spectacular views of Scotland, England, Ireland & Wales can be enjoyed.

This evening the Clipper Adventurer will depart Douglas and continue across the Irish Sea to Liverpool, England.

  • Wednesday - September 20
    Chester, Liverpool - Albert Dock

The Clipper Adventurer will arrive in Liverpool Docks early this morning.

chester1.jpgNon-Golfers will travel by motorcoach from Liverpool to Chester, one of the finest heritage cities in the world, with the most complete city walls in Britain. Explore the exciting history of Chester with short walking tour through the unique half-timbered galleried streets and enjoy the splendor of the black and white buildings.
Returning to Liverpool in the early afternoon, a visit to the Albert Dock is recommended. Britain's most popular heritage attraction has something for everyone, interesting shops and gift carts, together with top class attractions such as the Beatles Story, Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Tate Gallery.

Departing early evening the Clipper Adventurer will sail to Dublin.

  • Thursday - September 21
    Dublin

The Clipper Adventurer will arrive early this morning at her berth in the heart of Dublin City.

    dublin2.jpg

    PLEASE NOTE:
Those passengers only participating in Celtic Links By Sea and not participating in the Ryder Cup program disembark at this stage.

Non-Golfers have the opportunity to explorer Dublin, Ireland's capital city. It has fast become one of Europe's most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities. The city has always had a reputation as a great historical city, and its strong links with world literature and the arts are readily apparent. It certainly has a lot to offer visitors - not least it's diverse attractions. There is a wealth of architectural detail with the medieval core of the city surrounded by elegant Georgian squares. A great way to see Dublin is on foot or simply enjoy a drink in one of Dublin's many pubs and bars.

Late this afternoon there will be an opportunity to attend Opening Ceremony of the Ryder Cup at the K Club when the players are introduced by their Team Captains.

    Clipper Adventurer

    perry golf - clipper adventurer11.png

Length: 330 feet      Gross Tonnage 4,364 tons
    Crew: American and European

Img171.jpgThe Clipper Adventurer is a handsome expedition vessel reminiscent of the days of the great ocean liners, with lots of varnished wood and brass.  She sails on a wide variety of voyages — in Europe, the Canadian Arctic, the U.S., South America, and Antarctica.

Built in 1975 as the Alla Tarasova in the former Yugoslavia, the 122-passenger M/S Clipper Adventurer underwent a $13-million conversion in 1998 in Scandinavia, and features 61 comfortable, all-outside cabins, with lower beds, private bathroom facilities, and individual temperature controls.

Img174.jpgThe window-lined dining room seats all passengers at leisurely single seating,
where superb American and Continental cuisine
is served by Clipper’s friendly staff.

There are two lounges — the Main Lounge and Bar on Promenade Deck, seating 130 passengers; and the Clipper Club, also on Promenade Deck, seating 45 passengers. There’s also a library/card room, a small workout room, a gift shop, and a hair salon.

Img177.jpgUnique to the Clipper Adventurer is a spacious, covered promenade with a beautiful wooden deck (varnished Oregon pine) where passengers can view the seascapes.
There’s also plenty of open deck space on the Boat Deck and Sun Deck, while an observation platform located forward below the Bridge is ideal for wildlife viewing.

The Clipper Adventurer is an oceangoing vessel equipped with an ice-strengthened hull (A-1 ice class) ideally suited for cruising in remote environments such as Antarctica, but supremely comfortable anywhere she sails. A fleet of Zodiac landing craft provides access to areas where no infrastructure exists. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art satellite navigation and communication equipment including telephone, fax, and e-mail.

perry golf - clipper captain.jpgThe Captain and his officers maintain an open bridge to give passengers an opportunity to observe and ask questions. An experienced cruise staff, physician, and onboard lecturers accompany all voyages to enhance the passengers’ enjoyment of the places visited.

     IMPORTANT INFORMATION
    provided by Perry Golf

    • EMBARKATION:
Like all cruise ships, the M/S Clipper Adventurer requires time to "turn around" the ship on days when one cruise is disembarking in the morning, with a new cruise embarking in the afternoon. This is required to carry out essential maintenance, housekeeping, replenishing of supplies etc.
It is therefore not possible to board the ship on embarkation day until 4:00PM.
While an early registration and basic lounge facility at a local hotel on the day of embarkation is available, we strongly recommend that clients consider arriving at least one day early and stay overnight in a local hotel. This will ensure a more relaxing embarkation day.
    • DISEMBARKATION:
Generally passengers will be able to disembark the M/S Clipper Adventurer from approximately 6:00am and all passengers are required to vacate the vessel by 9:30am. We strongly advise you check with Jana's Dream Cruises who can advise of the appropriate details for your cruise before making any airline arrangements.
    • PASSPORTS:
A valid passport is required to enter the United Kingdom or Ireland. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the date you will be returning home. Visa requirements will be advised based on your passport nationality
    • PHYSICAL FITNESS:
The M/S Clipper Adventurer has a limited number of decks, and there are not many stairs to climb. There is no elevator onboard. On most occasions we will dock the ship alongside at a berth, simply requiring passengers to disembark using the gangway. On some occasions however we will anchor, and use either local tenders or the ship's fleet of zodiac landing craft to reach the shore. Both of these methods are safe, and do not require particular levels of fitness.
    •  GOLF HANDICAPS:
Some of the clubs, which you will visit, can occasionally require visitors to show handicap cards. While this is very uncommon, we do recommend you travel with a handicap card. Jana's Dream Cruises or Perry golf accept no responsibility, if you do not and are subsequently denied golf. Certain clubs also place maximum handicap restrictions on visitors. If your handicap is greater than 24 (men) or 36 (ladies) please notify us, so we can discuss which clubs may have relevant restrictions.
    • CADDIES & GOLF CARTS:
The available supply of caddies varies at each club. At some, all caddie requests can be met, at others caddies may be extremely limited. We travel with our own caddiemaster to ensure continuity in the process. We do our best to allocate caddies based on need and as fairly as possible. At a few clubs there are also a small number of golf carts. All cart and caddie fees will be notified daily and are payable directly. We will provide complimentary pull carts for any clients who do not have caddies.
    • ONSHIP DINING:
An open seating policy is operated on the M/S Clipper Adventurer, and it is not possible to reserve tables in advance. Tables are generally 2,4,5,7's with the Captain's table being an 8 top. It is our experience that passengers find this an enjoyable and satisfactory arrangement, allowing passengers to move around and mix, or stay within their own company should they choose.
    • OFFSHIP DINING:
Where the ship is permitted to take foodstuffs ashore, we provide box lunches for golfers and nongolfers. In some countries, regulations prohibit this, and food & beverage purchases ashore in golf clubhouses etc are at passengers own expense.
